Hi Everyone,

This is a bit of an 'odd ball' question that relates to a barcode scanner that is lost at my work. The scanner is a CK3XAA4M000W4100 and it operates through Wi-Fi.

My question(s) are actually two part -

1). Is it possible to triangulate the location of a Wi-Fi device using software? If so what software do you recommend?

2). Are there any 'industrial strength' infra red / bluetooth / wi-fi locators available that you can recommend? The idea being here that I will stick a physical locator onto each of the remaining scan guns in our fleet. If one of those guns get lost I will be able to find it. I am thinking along the lines of the 'car key locator' kind of device.

Any help with any of the above will be greatly appreciated.

Kind Regards,

Davo

First it would have to be transmitting some signal all the time you could detect. If for example it was connected to one of your AP or at least attempting to connect you could see that traffic. You could use a wireless capture software...it only runs in linux... and a direction antenna on your wireless nic and watch the signal levels. You would need to know the actual mac address of the device although I suppose since the mac addresses are similar if you knew all the mac addresses of the devices that were not lost you could assume the one you see with a similar mac was the device you were looking for.

Now if you had one of the fancy wireless controllers that run multiple AP in a building they actually have a triangulation feature than can tell you where any device is located to a point. They use the signal levels from all the AP to give you a estimate. It is generally used to locate unauthorized wireless equipment or in some cases for things like 911 location of a wireless phone.

Now if you are looking for something that will track stuff outside your building then the device itself would need features like the find my iphone software has where it would in effect send you its location.
