On my linksys e1200 i noticed an issue where my default gateway was changing from 192.168.*** to 172.16.*** so i tried to access the router's settings using the typical 192.168 gateway ip and get page doesn't exist. I use the new 172.16.**** and i wind up on a netgear router - which i dont own a netgear router.

Things get a bit weirder (at least this is weird to me) - I factory reset my linksys router and yet I still get internet access via the netgear. The hidden SSID and WPA2 password set up on my linksys to connect wireless still allow connection. I find this weird as, since I did a factory reset, which should reset those settings, i can still connect to the internet with the SSID and password.

I've directly connected to the modem and get connection (modem is a ubee d3 from comcast) so I dont think the issue is related to the modem since its not wireless. I've tried to connect to the router via the ethernet cable, but have no luck getting to the settings.

My equipment:
Ubee D3 Cable Modem
Linksys E1200 Router

Other Router:
Netgear Wireless N150 Router

Anyone have any idea whats going on? Thanks in advance

I am going to assume you can power your router and modems off and you still get into the netgear. This pretty much would imply you have your PC setup incorrectly. I would go in and remove any wireless network you have created and start over. The PC may be failing to connect to your router and then just finding any open wireless connection it can and connecting.

What I don't understand is how you managed to setup a hidden SSID and WPA password on your linksys router if you can not connect to it via Ethernet. You almost always do the inital configuration of a new router via ethernet cable.

Well first off it sounds like you didn't fully reset your linksys router. I also am assuming your modem has a dhcp server in it which the Netgear must be picking up ip addresses. That's why you can connect and get through te the internet.

How have you set the routers up? Did you turn off dhcp? It would appear you are trying to use one as an access point. If so you MUST be sure only one device is a DHCP server on your lan network.

So if you have a pc connect to the modem and open a command window and use the "ipconfig" command. This will tell you what the ip address of your modem is. You then should be able to access it. Also make sure your pc is set to obtain an ip address and it may require a reboot to renew its lease and get a new ip address.

Once you have access to your modem then connect it to the wan port of what ever router you are going to use and be sure dhcp is off on the other one.

The Actiontech modems can be funky. I have one. But you should get through to it doing what I suggest.

Thanks for the response, much appreciated. Your assumption was correct, I didn't fully reset as I thought. However I did have another new in box router, the effect same - an e1200.

I accessed the new router and did the setup, when I ipconfig I get the netgear router - which does not being to me I don't even know who in my neighborhood does.

I am just trying to figure out how is it possible for me to pick up else's hardware and internet - and how to get back to my normal setup.

About disabling dhcp - since the netgear ip shows up as the gateway and I dont own it I can't disable dhcp on it. If I disable the dhcp on the Linksys do you think it would solve the issue?

Thanks again
