*Bare with me guys, im a bit of a noob when it comes to computers so i'll try my hardest to explain what's been going on.*

Just recently I've come across a problem with my CPU overheating and turning off after playing any game.
I've had this computer for about a year and a half now, and I've never had a problem with playing games on high settings.
I've researched for problems related to mine and did what they said but it still hasn't helped. So I was hoping you guys could point me in the right direction and find what the specific problem is.

I downloaded CPU temp to keep track of the temps, and it idles at around 38c. But when I start to play any game, my temps sky rocket... I guess this has been happening since I downloaded Firefall about a week ago. Even when I set the settings to low the temp increases to around 55-90c and that's when I alt-f4 before it shuts down, then it drops back to 38.

I cleaned my whole system from dust, re-applied thermal paste multiple times, checked to see if my liquid cooler might have been air locked (still not sure if I did that correctly, but wouldn't idle temp be a lot higher if I hadn't?), repositioned my radiator/pump multiple times, and I still don't understand what the problem is. I spoke with a friend and he told me to just get a new cooling system, but im not going to buy anything until im 100% sure I know what the issue is.

My gpu also gets to 40c max. when gaming, but I dont think that is the problem.

Help me please!

After the 4 times of re-applying the thermal paste, I re-applied it again about an hour ago. My computer is staying on longer but it is now idling at 60-70c.

Try changing the cooling water and new paste.

The liquid cooler is factory sealed though.

Since you're not overclocking the CPU at all it has to be your CPU cooling, and honestly Asetek is the last water cooling company on the planet I would buy from.

I had 3 failed pumps from Asetek in the past, their support and RMA was a joke, and I finally got so mad I took a sledge hammer to all three pumps, at least then I knew what was wrong with them! And after it was over I felt some kinda sick satisfaction, and decided to never buy another Asetek product! :)

I will completely quit water cooling before I ever buy Asetek again, as a matter of fact I did quit water cooling for close to 4 years after that incident, but thanks to companies like Swiftech, XSPC, Watercool, Bitspower, and a host of others, I'm back to it! :)

A high quality air cooler like the Noctua NH-D14 or NH-D15 will give you better cooling performance than a single 120mm radiator CLC anyway.

My friend built my computer for me, so I had no idea what I was getting myself into lol. So you really think it's the liquid cooler? Is there anyway I can fix it?

No, But you can always RMA the thing to Asetek and go back to your stock cooler while you wait, since you are not overclocking, your stock cooler may be better anyway, try it and see.

I don't remember ever getting a stock cooler when I unboxed, and I've moved twice since then. So I have no idea where it could be. I think I might buy an air cooler when I get paid, but I'm not certain yet. (Btw, they shipped my computer with everything already inside)

Well that surely sucks!

With no stock or backup cooler your machine will have to be shutdown completely during the entire RMA ordeal.

If I were you, I would buy a backup air cooler first, for when this happens again, and with Asetek it probably will.

UPDATE: I just recently installed a new air cooling system and it got rid of the overheating problem, but now my computer is going more slower than ever before. It's takes about 10 minutes to get to the desktop..
