Question about Vsync

Hello guys.

I have monitor of 60hz scanning rate and I read on internet that Vsync saves you from unnecessarily using GPU resources when it exceeds 60fps.

Does turning on Vsync even affect when I am doing web surfing or watching a movie, everything that we usually do except playing games.

Vsync limits your GPU to a max output of 60hz/fps, this is mainly to prevent screen tearing as your monitor is juggling more frames than it can deal with but I guess also has that effect.
When under low load situations such as the desktop, the GPU is barely running, its not consuming much power. The idle power consumption of a high end modern card can be as low as 20W.

if you have a nvidia gpu in the nvidia control panel you can go to 3d setting and you can even select firefox to run on what nvidia calls adaptive vsynk.what it basicly does is when you have more than 60 fps vsynk is turned on and when you have lower frame rates vsynk is turned of to prevent input lag and stuttering a issue that ocures with vsynk.
in the control panel you can select any program and if it is not showing up you can browse it to find it.

So.. it doesn't matter if I turn on or turn off when I am just web surfing or doing some other than game?

Yes I am using Nvidia Gpu and already know that, thanks anyway.
I want to know whether turning on Vsync takes effect on idle mode. (Web-surfing, etc..)

download fraps and test it there is a option for it to be running even if there is no game running.
although the frame rate is not what make the gpu run more.
when you play a game you are rendering the game in real time.the gpu proceses polygons that make the carecters and enviroment surounding it and complex algorithms are run textures are being loaded into ram and so on.
when you watch a video on youtube or a movie you do not need to rerender the movie it has been renderd and it is compresed in a format of avi mp4 and so on.the only thing that you do is uncompress it when it is being played no complex polugons to be made no textures no complex algorithms.so your gpu does not run so intense and a minimal amount of procesing power is used to output that information on your display.
so you will see on you tube you will be getting frames like 30 fps 24 fps where videoes are normaly rendered and "saved" to be played at that framrate.maybe you will find videoes with 60 fps.
lets dont forget youtube now added support for 60 fps videoes.and 4k resolutions.
