The GTX 750 Ti or R9 270X would be the best ones I'd want to run with 500W. It really depends on the PSU quality though, what exact PSU model are we talking about?

That PSU can only deliver 400W on the 12V rails which is pretty dreadful and shows that it is an old design. I wouldn't give it more than an R7 265 or a GTX 650. Even then I'd worry because it has low quality Jun fu capacitors :(

That PSU is of unknown reliability:

I don't think you should go with 270X with that PSU, a 270 would be the best I'd want to try out with that PSU.

For a system using a single Radeon R9 270 graphics card AMD specifies a minimum of a 500 Watt or greater system power supply. The power supply should also have a maximum combined +12 Volt continuous current rating of 28 Amps or greater and have at least one 6-pin PCI Express supplementary power connectors.

Total Power Supply Wattage is NOT the crucial factor in power supply selection! Sufficient Total Combined Continuous Power/Current Available on the +12V Rail(s) rated at 45°C - 50°C ambient temperature, is the most critical factor.

I don't see a cause of worry for that GPU in your PSU. The only one being quality, its really low quality, I'd rather upgrade PSU first and then save up sometime for GPU.

XFX 550W Pro or Antec HCG 520W or SeaSonic SII 520/550W or EVGA 600W Bronze are all solid PSUs, and will easily support even a R9 280X :)

Here is a review of that PSU (badly translated from German I'm afraid) http://translate.google.com/translate?depth=1&hl=es&rur...

I was using the wattage supplied as an illustration of the old fashioned topology of the PSU

Don't advice the Neo 500W its just like the CX or builder ones. The SII is the best buy quality wise. Currently out of stock but the best PSU out there for 500-600W:
