Yes, your father is right. I am also an electronics engineer. All laptops have GPU. Some have integrated GPU and some also have dedicated graphic cards. Having more powerful GPU will mean more heat production, and since laptops are quite compact all components will get hotter because of it. But the only components that are sensitive to heat are electrolytic capacitors. Their lifespan gets shortened 2 times for every 10 degrees of temperature increase. But laptops are designed to run hot, so capacitors with long lifespan on high temperatures are chosen. So, unless you plan to use the same laptop for 15 years or so, you have nothing to worry about.

Discrete cards are used to do more powerful tasks. How you use the laptops with a discrete card affects it more then just having it. The big time gamers do things like overclock and play high graphic intensive games. It sort of like a sport car with a big engine. If you drive the car 80 all the time it will use more gas then if you drive 55 plus it will generate more heat. Gaming machines tend to use better cooling technology also like dual fans, Large air vents and thermal paste. I've had laptops with discrete cards with the year 2001 (7 laptops) and never had a problem with heat.

Also with the new processors having better energy management they can shut down discrete graphics if it's not needs. The integrated is on the AMD or Intel processor and every machine has one. Not every machine has a discrete card. Discrete cards have their own memory and integrated share system memory.
