If and only IF the only thing your are doing is gaming surfing the net playing music, watching movies etc. It's never a bad choice to go with the r9 280x if it is cheaper.

ON THE OTHER HAND, if you do video rendering, photoshop etc. go with a gtx graphics card hands down.

You can use gpuboss.com as a reference. Don't base on gpuboss scores and don't compare cuda cores and shader units. Base it on who has the higher pixel rate, texture rate, etc.

On 720p both those cards can get you 60+ on ultra. Although the 770 performs a bit well in most games.

If you want shadowplay, and other nvidia techs and don't think you would go over a 1080p monitor get the 770.
If you want multi-monitor setup and/or will get higher res of 1080, get the 280x.

If you don't care about all the above. just get the cheapest one.

If that's the case then it would be a smart choice to go with an AMD card. It's cheaper most of the time and delivers great performance considering the price. The only real disadvantage of going with an AMD card in terms of gaming is temps which may or may not be a big deal for you. Not being biased here, its just facts lol :D
