why no?! You can replace i3 with i5. under one condition, that you have a motherboard with socket g1 (rPHA988) or g2 (FCPGA988). If you have chipset HM55, you can replace with i5-520M.

check motherboard spec, some might supported i5 some might not.

With the latest BIOS version you should be able to use the entire range of i3,i5,i7. If the motherboard = quality, that is... Search for your speciffic laptop model and you will have a list of compatible processors among the info.
