Hi,

For the past few days the fan on my Radeon HD 6850 graphics card has been kicked into overdrive and is loud as hell. It only ever used to reach that level on rare occasions of high CPU usage as you'd expect, but a few days ago when it did just that, it never came back down.

I dusted out the GPU fan but it's still occuring from the moment I turn the computer on and never goes down until it's off (or in sleep mode where every fan turns off).

I think the temperature on the GPU is much lower than usual at least with the fan going nuts at all times, but obviously I don't want that. Thanks in advance for any help, and let me know if you need more information!

Use AMD catalyst software, go to Performance > AMD OverDrive, see if Enable manual fan control is checked... if it is maybe you/or someone else who is using PC set it that way and left it... if it is not checked you can check it and lower the RPM manually, however don't forget to get it up when you go gaming or do whatever that is stressful to the GPU.

Thanks for the reply, sounds like what I'm looking for. However I don't see AMD Overdrive in the Performance tab (assuming I'm in the right program, Catalyst Control Center). It's an updated version.

If I download 14.7 it will be beta version.. I don't want beta :D  14.4 is non beta version.. download that one and reinstall... :)

Ooh, so it is 0.0.

I uninstalled and reinstalled with 14.4, but there is still no option for AMD overdrive. :(  Could it be something like my card cannot utilize it? (Radeon HD 6850)

No, every AMD card has it.. it just controls the fan you must have it somewhere.. :S

Did you restart your PC when you reinstalled new driver?

Hmm weird o_o. I did restart as well, but it still doesn't show up in CCC.

I went and downloaded AMD OverDrive independently and now can tinker in fan control, but it doesn't seem like the GPU fan is available here, only the other cpu fans seem to be appearing.

I gave it a try and completely swept and reinstalled CCC following that link, but it still doesn't show up. :(  Actually there's not even a Performance tab now either haha.

Not sure if that could possibly be since I had installed AMD OverDrive seperately yesterday so it just doesn't add the option to CCC or if it's still bugging out. I don't know if the standalone download I have of AMD overdrive is the same thing, but I only see options to change fan speed on non-GPU fans.

I gave MSI Afterburner a try but the fan speed slidebar had no effect. I've found similar problems to this without any solutions, maybe theres some problem with the hardware and I'll just have to deal with it for now. @.@
