PC Surround Sound?

i'm thinking about getting the surround sound working on my PC system but i've heard that many games don't support it & so it would only work on DVD's and not on downloaded movies either. Is that true?

A lot of games support 5.1 or 7.1 channel surround. But I would get a home theater system just for the movies alone.... Also movies downloaded from iTunes and most other sites support full surround.
