System specs:

i7 960
24gb ram
radeon 5870 1gb
windows 7 64bit
Asus P6TD Deluxe mobo

-------------------------------------------------------------------------

Question: I play alot of "indie" games, which are notorious for being poorly optimized and processor heavy (Most recent game I've been playing is Space Engineers)
I also do a lot of video editing/rendering.

Should I upgrade my 960? should I look into OC'ing it? (I've never messed with OC before) or should I buy a new processor?

I'm already upgrading the GPU, so I don't want my processor to be a bottleneck.

Thoughts?

Its time for a new CPU get a decent haswell i5 or i7 . the i5 will more than suffice but if you can afford it the i7 will help for rendering more

Price range is $300 - $500

One thing I am not sure about is the socket type, Looking at my mobo box (which I still have XD ) it says its "LGA1366" thats not the socket type is it?
Its been a couple years and I don't' remember exactly what I put in it.

2nd. What I'm seeing on newegg, it looks like the best I could do is a 3.5 turbo'd to 3.9 would I notice that big of a difference?

Thanks.

Yes 1366 is the old socket type you have. Get a socket 1150 z97 motherboard and an i7 4770k. 2 the frequency in new architectures means nothing to old CPUs. The has well i7 at 2.0ghz would beat your CPU at 3.9ghz easy so you will notice a huge increase by upgrading.

So your saying get a new mobo while I'm at it?
Hmmm
I'm not familiar with the "haswell" processors, is that a intel line? or is it a different manufacture?

I've built 4 or 5 PC's in my day, but I haven't looked into it at all in the last 2-3 years, so I'm a little rusty.

Thanks!

Yes its intel. You can't stick any new components on your motherboard you will need to buy a new motherboard and CPU. Buy a Intel i7 4770k and any z87 or z97 motherboard

Thanks for the help so far.

I'm looking at this http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E168...
And they say it can be turbo'd, but don't mention to what (at least that I can see)

And I'm not seeing any z97's that have 6 RAM slots...is that a thing of the past? (My current ram config is 6 4gb ripjaw 240pin)
