Hi there... Im buying 4tb hard drives over time and putting them in my desktop to host my media server I plan to eventually buy a NAS and run something like raid 5. My question is. I already have 1 4tb WD RED Nas HDD but today 1 day only my local hardware store is selling 4tb NAS Seagates at a good price. will these work side by side in a NAS, raid set up in the future?

If you stay with Windows and use hardware RAID5 (not software RAID5) then all of your drives need to be the same
But if you use Window8/8.1 then look at ReFS, you can have mix drives with a redundant protected volume
Or you can use FreeNAS's ZFS then mix drives is OK. but I wont touch Drobo because once it failed, you are on your own. It is very very very hard to recovery data from Drobo
