Hi :)

I've recently found some components when I dealt with the mess that is (or was) my closet. The parts stem from a Dell XPS 720. Here's what I have:

1x Intel '05 Q6600 Intel Core 2 Quad 2 2.40 GHZ / 8M / 1066
1x GeForce 8800 GTX
1x Dell Creative Labs SB0460 SoundBlaster X-Fi Xtreme Music Sound
4x Elpida 1GB 2Rx8 PC2 - 5300U - 555

I already have mouse, keyboard and monitor as well as blu ray drive. I should have a 500GB SSD somewhere. Q6600 seems to be LGA 775 and I live in Switzerland so the only motherboards that are easily available to me are these:

I've only dabbled in PC building so my question is: Can I build something (small) with these components (plus motherboard/tower/power supply and switch out whatever is garbage)? I've noticed the only MB available for this socket are micro ATX that's why I thought of the possibility of a smaller build. Could be mid sized just not the size of a regular tower.

I'd use it to play mostly Valve games and maybe as a media center further down the line. I plan on getting/building a good PC in a year or so but I thought I'd ask if there's a point in building something with what I have or if should just try to sell it and or gift it to friends.

Looking for suggestions, especially regarding case, tower and power supply. I only have the Q6600 without an external cooler so I'll probably need that as well. Willing to spend 300-350 CHF (330-385 USD) on this.

Any help is appreciated :)

Q6600 is a little dated, but with the right motherboard they can be easily overclocked all the way up to 3.6Ghz (or more)

8800GTX would show its age in a modern title, but should be decent enough for a lot of games.

Good thing you found the RAM 4GB, very expensive these days. You will need a board with 4 slots, otherwise you would be stuck with 2GB of memory, which really isn't enough.

Cases are a matter of preference, if it is temporary just buy a cheap off the shelf Mid-Tower. Between the two of those components CPU/GPU you will need a decent power supply.

Finding an LGA775 cooler might take some doing but they are out there.

Up til 2 months ago I was still using a Q6600 & 9800GTX+. They were beasts in their day. I played GTA IV & others quite well on it. The newer systems are much better but the old Quads still hold their own.

Hello,

I still have an ASUS 8800GTX which was paired with an Q9650 and while it was a very fast system, it was also very power hungry (450W in gaming, 500W Furmark, 90 Celsius). So, be sure you have a good quality PSU, at least 500W:

Your GTX has the original turbine cooler or an aftermarket one? Be sure you have a good airflow in the case (if youo want to use a mATX case, make sure that the motherboard's first slot is the x16 one, to assure enough ventilation space for the GPU):

The case:
