Hi guys, I currently have a rig with an i5 3570K & GTX 760. I use it for gaming and I got smooth frames in every game at high settings. I'm going to build another one with this overclockable Pentium G3258 as a side rig. Thats mean a budget rig for some fun. I saw the Pentium performs close to a stock i3 when running around 4.5Ghz. So the question is, if I'm going to get a better card for my i5 and put my GTX 760 with the Pentium, will it be serious bottleneck there? I mean will the Pentium hold the card back a lot from where it should perform? I'm not expecting it to be as good as an i5 and I will not go hard with the settings. Just nice settings with reasonable frames for a 760. I'm gaming on 1080P, the games will be BF3/4, Some CoD, Sniper Elite V2/3, Far Cry 3, AC4, Witcher 2, Skyrim and up coming AC Unity, GTA V, Witcher 3, Far Cry 4 and so on. Others will be some minor/old games and some MMO, MOBA which I think there's no problems. I game a lot and want an enjoyable experience. So anyone got some advices for this? Or might have been in similar situations? Any suggestions are welcome.

About Pentium rig, I have 2 sticks of 4GB DDR3-1333 and all other parts. Also a nice cooler for the little chip and Corsair CX500M PSU. So all I'm looking for is the CPU and a motherboard. Looking at ASRock Z97M/H97M Anniversary and MSI Z97/H97 Guard-Pro. Can they all overclocking? Or just the Z97 ones? These ASRock boards support G3258 out of the box but dont know about others. I dont have another gen4 CPU to update the bios and dont want to bother with that. I'm sure I can get ASRock for a good price but MSI Asus and Giga are a bit pricey. Please help me choose a nice overclockable board for a nice price.(not much more than +30$ from the CPU) I live in Thailand but the price is similar to US online stores.

Sorry for the long post, I just want to make myself clear. And thanks in advance.

the g3258 is most probably going to bottleneck the gtx 760 and how serious is the bottleneck is that is hard to say you have to test them and match the benchmarks in same game ....the motherboards are good for overclocking......and obviously the z series are made for OC but u can oc with both the z97 and z87....so if u get the asrock at good price go with it....gigabyte is good i personally dont trust MSI boards.....

It really depends what game you plays as to whether it will bottleneck or not. CPU intensive games it will bottleneck, for example Arma and Dayz, for games that are GPU intensive like Battlefield it will perform as well as the 3570K and the limiting factor would be the GPU (if they were otherwise on the same hardware).

Some of the H and B series boards support something called non-z overclocking now, the H97 Anniversary is one of these boards, however they are not built for overclocking in the same way as Z series boards. Also this non-z overclocking is due to a loophole in Intel's chipset code, which they are aware of, and they could release a fix that will stop non-z overclocking. So I would still go for a Z series board unless you cannot afford one.

All the 97 boards should work with the G3258, however you'd want to update the bios as most motherboards have updates that improve the performance with the new chip.

I don't mind any of those motherboard brands, the MSI Z97 PC mate is a pretty popular entry level Z board, however I think the Asrock Z97 Anniversary would pair nicely with a G3258, so really any boards that are in you price range are fine, just look for one that has the features you want.

It's really strong per core and should play any MMO or older stuff very well due to the good IPC, I expect it would get bogged down in BF4 multiplayer though.

Thank you all guys, I've made up my mind to go with ASRock Z97M Anniversary for the motherboard. The only thing I'm worrying now is the bottleneck. Just like WhiteSnake91 said, old games will not matter. But in new games and multiplayer, will it be that bad? I mean the frames drop to unplayable or freeze most of time or worse. If so, I might reconsider to get something else or just get rid of the idea. Have you guys ever used a dual core CPU with such a GPU like GTX 760 or something in that level? That should be a good case for comparison.

Seems to run it decent from this video I found, in the comments they say Watch Dogs runs poorly on it though, but on the other side of that coin, it ran bad even on my rig...

Haha!! I've heard/seen a lot of Watch Dogs run badly even on high rigs but have not try it on mine for myself. It seems to be game's problem that needs to be fixed. But I'm not playing it for now anyway.
Thanks for help me finding that video, I will never find it myself. It is great and the guy who made it got everything I wanted to see, moreover he has exactly the same CPU and GPU I'm looking for, what a coincidence!! It seems my problem has been solved because the videos show that the Pentium can perform pretty good, at least better than what I'm expecting it to be. Thank you again WhiteSnake91, I'm picking your answer as a solution. And thanks to byza and prit87 for some good advices help me made up my mind a lot.

No prob...I wouldn't mind doing an unlocked pentium build since it's low of power consumption. I was thinking of pairing mine with a gtx 750 superclocked or 750ti, the regular 750 superclocked played stuff as well as the 750ti in tests I saw, it's sort of an underrated gpu. I figured the dual core couldn't keep up in BF4 multiplayer but since the cores are so strong, it plays really smooth and can keep up. I guess the "you need an 8 core" argument doesn't mean much anymore
