As a second storage drive, you can put the laptop drive in a desktop.
A laptop drive is much smaller then a desktop drive so you will need to get a 2.5 to 3.5 inch adapter to hold the drive (unless you have a higher end computer case that has brakets for both sizes).
A laptop drive is slower but for file storage you wont really notice (now for windows os drive you would).
As far as wiping off the informaiton, that is up to you.
You can install it into the desktop and then in the desktop you can format it (wipe it) if you wish.
