Hello All. I recently replaced the hard drive in my Gateway DX Series DX4200-UB001A after the old one failed. I didn't have a windows vista cd, so I installed the XP SP3 that I did have and after installing sound drivers from gateway website that seems to work fine. Specs are:
• Phenom X4 9550 (2.2GHz)
• 6GB DDR2 640GB HDD (HDD replaced with 1TB Seagate from Best Buy)
• Windows Vista Home Premium 64-bit
• ATI Radeon HD 3450

The issue is:

The computer freezes nearly every day. It happens particularly when I've left it for a few hours and come back to it, but sometimes just while I am on it. It is not under a heavy load when it happens (usually just browsing youtube if any window is open at all). When it freezes, I am able to move the cursor around the screen for a few seconds, and the keyboard buttons work in that few seconds. Then nothing responds.

Not Ctrl+Alt+Del
Not the Windows Key
Not Caps, Scroll, Or Num Lock
The mouse optical light is on but the cursor doesn't move
I can't even shut the computer down by holding down the power button.

Whatever image was on the screen remains there. The computer does not turn off nor play any motherboard beeps (once though, I got one long continuous beep from the mobo and speakers until I unplugged the unit).

I have to physically unplug the computer or turn off the power strip to get the computer to turn off.

After that, I try to plug it back in, and push the power button, and nothing happens. No lights, no sound, no fans spinning (the case is open so I see), no activity at all. This happens no matter how many times I push the power button.

Then several hours later, the computer randomly turns on (on its own) and boots up like normal. Everything works fine as if no problem existed, until it freezes again. Sometimes it works for several days, other times only hours.

I’ve tried:

Unplugging the unit and holding the power down to drain any residual power, removing the CMOS battery, removing the memory, disconnecting the hard drive, using a different outlet, checking for burst capacitors (none apparent), unplugging all external devices, holding the power button down and plugging in the unit while it’s held down, changing the bios settings to enable system reboot on power failure, disabled all screensavers , standby, and power saving settings.

None of it has helped to get the computer to start, nor helped to keep it from freezing.

Noteworthy:
I do not get a BSOD

The power button functions normally to power on and off the computer when it is not in “freeze mode”

Worth mentioning again, the computer functions completely normally until it freezes, and after (several hours later) it boots back up.

Any ideas what could be going on here?

Solution
is your computer set to "sleep" or hibernate? go to control panel>power options to check.i set mine to never go to sleep.seen a lot of problems with sleep settings.

The computer was cleaned out when I replaced the hard drive. I have never replaced the thermal paste though, nor removed the heatsink from the cpu. When it's on it routinely runs much heavier loads with no problems or lag. Usually when it freezes it has been left idle for some time, and I am just coming back to it. Could the cpu overheat because of this? Would that prevent the computer from turning back on for several hours? The case is open and located immediately in front of a window air unit.
