Hi all,

I am building a new PC. I am not building it per say, but using a site that I have used before with good results.

I am NOT going to overclock the computer... will be happy with the way it comes.
I am not sure I want water cooling, however the options I have are:

Corsair Hydro Series H60

Enermax ETS-T40-TB CPU Cooler w/ T.B.SILENCE

Cooler Master Hyper 212 EVO CPU Cooler w/ PWM fan

I was reviewing online and it seemed the Enermax ETS T40 is better than the CM Hyper 212 Evo but this site many still recommend the CM..

Will there be a big difference, and what would you recommend for that system. I was trying to avoid water cooling in fear of a mess or just general thinking more could go wrong with it over time. I will keep this PC for 3 years (every 3 years I basically get a new 1).
Thanks for all your help/insight.

-Mike

The H60 will keep the cpu cooler but the case will be hotter.
Liquid cooling is really air cooling, it just puts the heat exchange in a different place.
The orientation of the radiator will cause a problem.
If you orient it to take in cool air from the outside, you will cool the cpu better, but the hot air then circulates inside the case heating up the graphics card and motherboard.
If you orient it to exhaust(which I think is better) , then your cpu cooling will be less effective because it uses pre heated case air.

The 212 evo will be quieter.
That does not help you much does it???

Personally, I will never use liquid cooling except in a case with limited space for a good air cooler.

Oh wait, I didn't read well enough till he pointed this out. Yea if you aren't overclocking don't worry about it, the basic cooler will be fine. If you buy something the cheapest little $15 cooler is all you would want, but really there isn't any real need. The stock cooler isn't bad and does fine.

No need for a Phanteks cooler. The CM EVO 212 is an awesome upgrade to keep even a non OC'd chip cool & quiet. Water cooling, Noctua/Phanteks are for enthusiast over-clockers, so is the EVO but the price point on the EVO kinda lets everyone into the "cool" crowd. See what I did there?

If you are buying a 4690K and not overclocking, you are wasting your money. A 4690 will be cheaper and run just as fast.

Same for the cooler. The stock intel cooler does fine. The only reason to buy an aftermarket cooler is to get a larger 120mm fan which will be quieter under heavy loads.

I would spend the extra $30 for the hyper212 for the quiet, but only if it will fit properly in your case and clear your ram.

Hi - the Hyper 212 is $19 extra... I believe I am going to go with that now after this thread.

The case is a Cooler Master N600 (w/ side window). The ram is G skill Ripjaws X 2133 8gb x 2.

One question that I am confused by your 1st comment:

The 4970K is 4.0 ghz stock... the 4970 is 3.6.... so isn't the 4970K 400mhz more?

OOps!. I read 4690k not 4790K.
Sorry.

Yes, 4.0/4.4 is supposed to be the stock speed.
That is what I do. But at those higher stock speeds, you will be running at higher than normal vcore.
That generates more heat so I suggest a good cooler.
The hyper212 should be the minimum and will do fine.
I would avoid liquid cooling.
With your budget, you could look at a noctua tower cooler with a 120 or 140mm fan if you value quiet.
Their fans and coolers are superb but pricier.

Now knowing that I will be "fine" with basically anything since I am NOT overclocking the i7 4790K...

The Hyper 212 Evo or the Corsair H60? Its a 16 dollar difference... rebate of $5... makes it $11 dollar difference.

The bottom line: Which of the 2 will keep it cooler and which is quieter?

I am buying this pre built on a site that I can customize... so these are the 2 options. I can't do anything else.
