why is the gt 740 so expensive

By what method have you actually assigned the GT 740 a value?
It should be 60% the performance of the GTX750Ti and it starts at $85 USD. The $85 EVGA is probably about 75% the performance of a stock GTX750Ti with 2GB of memory so that's a great deal:

That's faster than an HD7750 and way faster than a GT 640, on a new card that sips power so I think the price is EXACTLY where it should be.

GTX 650 re-badge. But no it should cost only about $80 bucks. I have no idea why they sale for around $100! I am also angry that some have DDR3 in them! This makes me so mad! The GTX 650 / GT 740 is not a bad gaming card. But when the card's memory bandwidth is crippled from 80.0 GB/s all the way down to 28.5 GB/s because of the DDR3, It will perform worse than the old GT 640.
