PC restarting, could be CPU overheating?

Hello,

This is my first time posting here so I hope you guys can help me.
My PC has been restarting itself for no apparent reason and no error messages whatsoever. It all started some months after I upgraded my GPU and my PSU, not sure if the problem is related to them though.

Here is the thing, I have ran some tests and found out that my CPU is overheating to 85C, that could mostly be the case but I noticed some other symptoms that make me unsure of that, here is the list:

1- computer shuts off when I accidentally hit it with my foot. ( PSU problem?)
2- it sometimes won't turn on if I don't unplug and plug the PSU cable back. (PSU problem?)
3- some of my USB entries have died. (MB?)
4 - Mouse sometimes won't turn on unless I unplug and plug back in.
5- From time to time it works for hours playing games. In fact, sometimes playing games have brought the CPU temp down to 60C.
6- I have tryed positioning a big fan pointed directly to the CPU and it didn't decrease it's temp.

My specs:

MB: ASUS P8H61-M PR

2X 4GB DDR3 1333MHz/1.5V (PC3-10600) Kingston ValueRAM

Intel Core i5-2500 3.3GHz/6MB/IGPU (4C/4T) LGA1155 BOX [SR00T]

VGA Radeon 7970 HD Sapphire

PSU Corsair 750w Tx

Thank you!

A buddy of mine had a similar problem - thought it was his psu - it was an XFX - also a quality brand. Turned out his PSU to mobo connector had never been fully inserted. Check all of your connectors.

I did check my connectors and the problem persists. Also, would that make my CPU temp go super high?

Bruce,

I did the PC build by myselft but I didn't make the parts setup, a friend of mine did. I've only done the upgrade by myself (PSU and GPU). Never over clocked and didn't notice any hot air from inside. I'm using the stock cooler and the software I use to monitor temp is the HWMonitor and Fanspeed

Your computer shutting off when you hit it with your foot definitely implies faulty wiring or loose connections in/from your PSU. Corsair has excellent service, so if your PSU is still under warranty you should absolutely contact them about an RMA. Chances are good they'll just give you a new one.

85°C is too hot and it may reduce the processor's life span if you run it like that over the long-term. But it should "run" fine. It may throttle itself down but I wouldn't expect shut-downs.

The System is restarting itself, is it the PSU or the CPU, or both?

Unless you can specifically rule out the PSU, I'm going to say that's the most likely cause. Again, the fact that your system shuts down from physical contact indicates some wiring or cable issues, or at least a loose connector somewhere. The only strike against your CPU is that it gets too hot. That's bad, but shouldn't shut down the system.

I'd check all the power supply cables to make sure they are securely connected where they need to be, and try cleaning out dust from the PSU with a can of compressed air through the air intake (never open the PSU housing). Definitely check to see if its still under warranty. Corsair really does issue replacements for this sort of thing.

The connectors look correct, otherwise it wouldn't work properly for a couple of months. I would go straight to the PSU if it weren't for the high temperature of the CPU. I assumed that if the PSU was failing it would give me a blue screen or would shut down completely, instead of restarting itself.

I just don't see the connection between the high CPU temperature and the PSU.
