asus laptop shuts down when I use the keyboard

I have a (relatively) new asus solid state laptop. worked great until tonight. now whenever I touch the keyboard it shuts down. Doesn't do it when I use the touch screen keyboard. Any suggestions???
ps - I have windows 8.1

The problem happens when I use the main keyboard, not an external one and NOT the touchscreen keyboard. This happened around the time that some type of windows 8.1 update was automatically downloaded installed. Strangly my symantec antivirus started acting strangely (said that 3 services were disabled). I ran antiviral software (including one from VIPR through a USB) and it didn't find anything.
I did uninstall the touchpad driver but that didn't seem to help
Also symantec now working ok
