I am trying to build a desktop and want to know if there is a ratio of cpu to gpu. And is the amd APU even worth it or should I just buy an intel + nvidia combo?

More about : cpu gpu ratio

An apu is alright for basic tasks and some light gaming but if you want HiDef the you are better off with a descrete GPU and a better processor than an apu. So either Intel or AMD and your favorite brand of GPU should work fine.

It depends on budget and what your needs are. If you plan on gaming an APU is usually a waste.
As for the ratio, a 2.5 (2-3):1 ratio works fairly well, GPU:CPU.
So say you buy a 4690k, around 300 bucks, spend the money to grab something like a 290/780/290x.

This is not an exact science, nor the real way to go about it. Just a budget can help determine it for you.

Oh. Thanks for the info. Are the i7 models worth it for the extra $100 or should I just settle for an i5 with a better gpu?

Unless you plan to do render work or video editing stick to an i5.

One last question, are the AMD processors powerful enough to run games smoothly or should I not even bother?

They are good enough, I can run almost any game on ultra (games like BF4 on high) on an old Phenom II.
I wouldnt recommend it unless you are on a budget. They perform well in their respective price ranges, but the AM3+ socket is a dead end now, and FM2+ isnt aimed at performance, where Intel's Z97 chipset and LGA 1150 socket is well on its way.

Yes, yes, and triple YES! I have a $130 FX-8320 and I play EVERY game, like Battlefield 4 smoothly on ultra!
