Hi all,

my apologies if this is posted in the wrong section, I'm new to the forum but I've heard a lot of great things so thought I'd give it a try!

I'm looking to turn my rather large living room in to an office/living room, as I'm starting a company from home. In order to do this, I would like to put a desk along the length of one of the walls.

I would like to find a desk that is about 4 meters in length and I have no idea where to start looking for something like this. The cheaper the better of course, so all ideas are welcome!

Thank you,

Chris.

Solution
for reference... 4m = 13ft

if you want cheap you can do what i did and re-use a table that was being thrown out by a retail company as a desk. all i did was clean it up and put formica veneer on the top and sides and it looks excellent. only $35 in materials for a 7ft (just over 2m) desk. click "build" in my signature to see photos.

another good and easy thing to do if you have tools is build a desk yourself. run a strip along the wall to support the backside and have some legs to support the front. the top can be made out of finish grade plywood or you can use mdf and put veneer on the top and banding on the edges. total cost for a desk that large would be about $150-200 here, i'm not sure about there. you would of course need the...
Build one.
At lowes or home depot look for a long kitchen counter.
Screw some 4 x 4 legs in the corners, and perhaps an extra to support the middle.
On the back, find a long power strip for electrical outlets.
I know they come in 12 foot lengths, possibly more.
Or, you could build 2 8 foot desks.
This is what I mean:

if you want flakeboard fall apart cheap furniture... ikea often has you covered there. i'm sure you can find something that works... or multiple somethings you can put next to eachother to work. i cannot say that i'm impressed with most of their products though.

you could also use 4 of these http://www.amazon.co.uk/LEVV-Graphite-Computer-Clear-Glass/dp/B004ZKA1AA/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1408675622&sr=8-3&keywords=glass+computer+desk next to eachother

if you were open to other ideas or shapes then your best dollar for dollar value may be in the L shaped computer desks with designs such as http://www.amazon.com/Z-Line-Belaire-Glass-L-Shaped-Computer/dp/B0019MAUTE which typically cost only about double the rectangular desk above.

of course i did not list any of the "expensive" options such as buying a high end office furniture set since you wanted cheap.

also a bit more expensive then what i listed here is buying some used office cubicle walls and desks. however, this would make for a nice home office for some people

if you wanted additional ideas on what you could do...

i'd suggest sketching a layout of the room with basic dimensions... and perhaps taking a few photos.

we could then tell you where we would put the desk and what we would do.

also list if you have tools and if building it yourself is an option.

Solution
You can see my build here, as well as the desk holding it all. (cables woo)
The desk is 6'x3'x3' with braces at 15" high for reference.

The desk was built in my welding 1 class, steel totaled to 25 dollars (52 linear feet of angle iron and 1" square tubing) And the solid oak inlay for the desk itself was 50 dollars for a 36 sq ft piece of 1" think oak.
If you choose wooden legs and supports the price will be cheaper, using composite boards instead of solid oak lowers prices, and steel frames get expensive.
