RAM for OC'd 4790k

mrmez

Splendid
Last part of my upgrade.
This system (like the previous) will need to last a long time, with GFX upgrades as needed, so I anticipate having to OC sooner or later.

A bit out of the loop with RAM speed requirements for over clocking.

Will be running a custom water cooler, to give you an idea of how much it will eventually oc.

What sort of ram speed would i need (2x4Gb)?
1600, 1866 etc etc?

Thanks.

Well I won't correct you, that's your wife's job ....see my siggie :)

But this should answer your question

Faster memory (1600 to 2400 in this example) can improve average fps by anywhere from 0% to over 10%. Here you see metro...
What one person "needs" can be of no interest to another. It's oft said that faster RAM has no impact on gaming..... in truth it can be from 0 - 4% most of the time but on games like F1 and STALKER it can be above 10% (see THG link below). One things that is actually smaller than the performance increase is the increased cost of your computer to get it..... so is a 2% speed increase worth a 1% increase in system cost ... to my eyes, yes.

Also where faster RAM tends o have more effect is on minimum frame rates rather than average frame rates which everybody looks at when benching but it's those min. frame rates that are annoying. Also SLI / CF removes the typical GFX bottleneck and that extra oomph may be hampered by slower RAM in various circumstances.

So basically, yes its faster, most often marginally so but again, the cost increase is usually more marginal....some numbers for 16 GB

DDR3-1600 CAS 9 LP - $152 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820226388

DDR3-1866 CAS 9 LP - $170 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820231615

DDR3-2133 CAS 9 LP - $170 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820226420

DDR3-2400 CAS 10 - $190 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820231589

In the examples above, the move from 1600 to 1866 might give pause for thought .... this week ..... but the move from 1866 to 2133 is the proverbial "no brainer".... the 2400s are not low profile so if ya air cooling they likely out.... I usually put the Mushkins here but as they are the top dog at 2400 (Hynix modules with better timings), they sell out very fast as new stock comes in.

Prices change daily so check often.

Maybe I'm out of the loop, but last time I checked, overclocking ram can't overcome the random margin of error for testing FPS for modern games unless you are using an apu graphics solution.

Can someone correct me if I'm wrong?

Faster memory (1600 to 2400 in this example) can improve average fps by anywhere from 0% to over 10%. Here you see metro gaining less than 1 % and F1 gaining 11%. STALKER is another game that benefits greatly from faster RAM. The impact is however much bigger on minimum fps and CF / SLI situations
