I'm using a m5a97 r2.0 motherboard with an AMD fx 8320 cpu with stock cooler. I'm looking to upgrade the cpu cooler. I'm using high profile RAM so I dont want the heatsink to block RAMslots. any options? I'm looking for a performance fan so I can OC to around 4.0GHz. for now I'm limited to 3.5-ish due to the stock cooler.
I was looking into the arctic freezer a30, and Cooler Master Hyper TX3 EVO and the hyper 212. only the arctic freezer seems to fit.
for now I only use 2 RAM slots, so it's not such a big deal if my 1st slot gets blocked. but I might want to add some more RAM in the future. I'm also on a limited budget so watercooling is not an option for now.
The cooler naads to cleur up more then 30 mm not to block the RAM slot.

yes but I need at least 40mm clearance

after a few hours of googling, i found http://www.zalman.com/global/product/Product_Read.php?I..., which would be a tight fit, but I'm not familiar with zalman... the specs look nice, but I read that the heatpipes arent polished properly...

I'm using 2 Gskill ripjaws atm, which are 40mm high, but I'm not sure what the hight from the sockets to the connection is. it should'nt be more then a mm or so, but I dont wanna take any chances.

it does look quite good, but it is 5 mm too long :s I have the thermaltake commander msi case, which is limited to cpu coolers up to 170 mm. I am going to measure it right now though to see if it's possible.

It looks a bit strange on the site but it's like this,
140 x 140 x 175 mm=widht-height-depth.

Maybe you will even let me know how it does on the amd cpu? :)

sure will, it's ordered, should be here next week thursday! I'll see how much I can get out of my CPU!(hoping it'll go up to 4.2 at least without exceeding 65°C under full load)

and I'm back, I just installed it, and I must say i'm a bit disapointed, it's about the same performance as the stock cooler, so I must have done something wrong... anyway, I'll reaply the thermal paste and make sure every screw is screwed tight. but that's something for after the exams ;)
I was also wondering if the fan could be replaced?

I'm sorry to hear that, i hope that reapplying the cooler and paste will make it do better.

You should be able to replace that fan. Why?

and I was thinking of ordering a fan with more airflow to actually make it cool better

Will look at that other post as well.

About another fan,i think you can place any fan on it with 120mm holes so fans that re 120mm or even fans that are 140mm with 120mm holes like this one for instance,
http://tweakers.net/pricewatch/335616/thermalright-ty-1...
noctua has these too and even scythe has fans that have higher rpm that are the same as the one that is on top of it right now.

it is a 140mm fan though :p  so I'll have to go for that ^^
just need to make sure it's a 4 pin connection then

The holes on that fan are on 120mm and all 120 mm pwm fans should imo work. You just might cover less of the cooler.

You used all the right parts for the cooler to be mounted on an am3 socket? Doublechecked?

Make the paste layer as thin as possible.

I did, I could try to take of the coolpaste again though, and try to go thinner. I might buy myself a 120mm fan with some high airflow as this 140 mm fan makes my graphics card vibrate when it's at 1300 rpm QQ. yet another problem haha, I'm going to get myself some rubber spacers instead of the plastic ones that came with it

A good thing to try imo.

Maybe that one thing in this has to do with the other?

Did you consider placing the blue led fan and the back fan at the top of the case to see if they might not interupt the airflow to the cooler that much? Or at least that blue led fan. Just looking for possibilities to get better temps.

I was thinking of that aswell to put a less powerfull fan at the top. the air gets sucked out before it has a chance to cool. i'll look into it. a thinner layer of coolpaste made a difference of 1 degree so I got that going for me ;)

and well, I cant put fans at the top of my case as there was a little design error from thermal take. there isnt enough space to put a normal sized fan, it would have to be a slim one.
anyway...I'm going to replace my exhaust fan with a 1000rpm 120mm fan and see how it goes.

well I'm putting back the other fan, this made it worse even, I'm just going to check if I can get a cashback and get another fan

I recommend a h60. Cheap, easy to setup and great temps

well I was looking for something in a lower pricerange, but it looks like I should go for liquid cooling anywayQQ I'll better start saving some money!

I think the h60 is roughly around $90 now

actually solved it myself. the huge heatsink was blocking the airflow from my casefans, so the hot air wouldnt get out of my case fast enough. after placing a fan above the cpu cooler (folowing the direction of the fins from the heatsink) I got the temp down by 12 degrees. my CPU is currently running on 4.1GHz at 64 degrees under full load that lasted 20 minutes

Something you said at my suggestion to relocate fans to the top of the case. You bought a slim one?

well no...I took my scythe 3300rpm fan and taped it on top on my case, yes i actually taped it... then I cut a little hole to put the cable through. and hey, it works so it's totaly worth it lol
