Are there any tv tuner cards that support HDMI input for Direct TV users????

I've read post after post, but no one seems to know of a TV tuner (usb or PCIe) that supports HDMI input.

I have a USB TV tuner Avermedia Volar Windows Starter Hybrid tuner that was hooked up to standard definition DirecTv box, but recently got a newer DirecTv box with high definition on that set top box..

It does not come out as high definition on my monitor because I believe that since the USB TV tuner device uses a Co-ax connector then that is the highest definition that the co-ax can deliver.

If the DIrecTV signal comes out of the box as high definition 1080i then passes through the co-ax, then that reduces the definition to the level of co-ax (like 480 instead of 1080i) and thus plain-old standard defintion tv.

Is there anything that I can do to get high definition sat tv at 1080i levels on my computer?

For satellite TV, I think your only option is to look for a capture card rather that a tuner card. Something like this AverMedia AVerTV HD DVR would probably work for you.

It works with the TV tuner that I have now,,,,record/play/live tv, timeshifiting...etc,, just not high definition.

But, wouldn't it be the same no matter what service (satellite or cable) you use since the USB device uses co-ax as an input, and thus only 480 standard definition tv, no matter what is coming out of the box?

It seems that what I read about the Avertv that it still only comes out as basically standard definition tv.

The card I linked would accept the 1080i HDMI output of your new set top box as input and display as 1080i to your monitor. The set top box still performs all the TV Tuning functions.

So I shouldn't need to use the Avermedia USB TV tuner stick anymore, correct?

Correct. The set top box will handle the tuning capabilities and the capture card, installed in the PC will act as the HD DVR.
