for my sony PCG-41216L, Opt. drive (Matshita DVD-Ram UJ8a2as) does not detect a CD / dvd. I have cleaned the transport, tried to check the drivers, but found out at various sites that this sony does not require replacement of drivers. Now I am opting for replacing the drive. I have never opened this laptop and scared to deface it. Can anybody tell how can this drive be replaced and do I need a sony part or can I just buy a slim dvd replacement for it.
PS I also noted that the ribbon under the transport which is supposed to remain inside the slider comes out and gets squished under the slider and the laptop so there is a slight chance that this cable might have damaged internally.

Do I need to open the laptop or can this be done externally by reaching screws etc? Pl. help!

I guess I'd have to see it to know exactly what part you're talking about because I thought you were referring to the ribbon cable that connects to the plug the drive slides onto at one end and the motherboard at the other end. If the part you're referring to came out with the drive then you should have no worries. The plastic faceplace does get removed and installed on the new drive. Good luck and hopefully that's all the problem was.
If your optical drive cable has been "squished" under the carrier for the drive, it's likely the problem. Those are rather delicate and easily damaged. The optical drives themselves don't have a high failure rate but they do occasionally take a powder. It might be best to get a replacement cable along with the drive just in case. Here's a tutorial on replacing the drive on another model but it should be similar, if not let me know and I'll find a more relevant instruction. Replacing the cable will be more involved and will likely require taking it to a repair facility unless you feel up to removal of the keyboard.

Hi Darkbreeze, thanks to your detailed and well referenced response, it took me less than a minute to remove the drive. I will now seek a replacement and see if this was actually the problem. I guess, the outer plastic on the face of the drive gets detached so I could place it on the new one.
Also, the ribbon cable is located within the sliding part of the drive which gets squished when the slider is pushed inwards with a dvd. So i guess the new drive will come with better ribbon cable setup.

Again, your support and assistance is greatly appreciated. I will post once the problem is sorted.

The ribbon is located within the OD assembly, and would come within the sliding and the stationary parts when closing the drive. The good news is that I was able to replace with a similar drive (slim, SATA) and it works magnificently. I was able to place the plastic side cover almost effortlessly. It cost me $37.00 and this was totally unexpected. Again, Darkbreeze thanks much for your support!
