Hi guys, I am a big Wow/ lol player I also plan on playing around with Maya or Autodesk 3D Max and I was wondering what are the best things to upgrade my current unit with, I have a budget of about £300 to get some new components and not much more. I have a 1080Px monitor and my current specs are as follows.

CPU AMD 5500k
GPU GTX 650 1GB
PSU 1000W 80+ Gold ( got for future upgrade possibilities)
Ram 8GB of Vengeance ram.

I am currently looking at getting the following
AMD AM3+ motherboard (from a friend)
AMD FX-8320
R9 270x

any input will help just let me know what you think is best

Solution
That'd be awesome, I was just suggesting weaker CPU as your budget was a constraint I thought.
FX 6 series + good cooler + 990 MoBo + R9 280X = Ultra gaming at 50+ FPS :)
You can just keep your current MoBo and upgrade the GPU to R9 280X with Athlon X4 760k. CPU won't matter as much as GPU in gaming, and getting this one will get you comfortably to ultra on FHD. Then OC the CPU to get i3's/ FX 6300's performance, which is not very less than FX 8 series :)

im not very confident which over clocking and ive heard nothing but bad things about the stock AMD CPU coolers, is overlocking hard to do and is it save with a stock cooler ?

Firslty OCing is really easy. Secondly, slight OCing (like 200MHz) is Ok with stock coolers but the CPU will fry if serious OCing is done on it with AMD stock.

For that budget, I'd strongly suggest a good OCing CPU and MoBo if you're switching to FX/ Pentium, and getting a good GPU, like the R9 280 minimum for good high-ultra gaming for the coming 2-4 years. R9 280X would be comfortable on Ultra for the next 2-4 years. You'll not benefit from FX 8 series w/o OCing, they're just FX 6 series with a couple of more cores (no use, as games today don't require more than 4) and some factory OC.

What if I was to get a new 990 motherboard then get something like the FX-6300 over clock that get a coolmaster H212 for cooling and then get a R9 280x that be good ?

The 990FX chipset performs higher (and is better for overclocking), whereas the 970 is cheaper. Most 990FX boards support SLI while 970 ones don't. 990FX supports more features like more SATA III ports.

That's also the case in your options. The 990 has more SATA and SLI feature (not really needed as you're getting AMD GPU). The difference is not much IMO.

You can go on with the 970 and save some bucks there. No other performance difference besides the imp fact that 990FX OC better.
