I just bought this 500w power supply from Corsair, and I'm installing it on my PC which is a few years old.

http://www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos/ASIN/B00ALK1GFC/ref...

However, I have come to realise the cable with "CPU" written on the connector is 8 pin, whilst my motherboard only has a 4 pin socket. It is a semi modular power supply and none of the other optional cables are 4 pin either. Interestingly the 8 pin fits into the 4 pin slot (with 4 pins inside the slot, the other 4 outside, overhanging). Is this correct? Will it work? Or will I have to get a new one?

Yes, that cable is designed to accommodate 4 pin or 8 pin socket.

I looked up a good image of the plug on Newegg - it is a solid 8 pin plug (I was assuming 2 - 4pin plugs) - so I see your confusion. Suztera is correct - just use 4 of the 8 and move forward.

I was actually a bit of a daredevil and went ahead with it anyway - glad to see it's working and not making any horrible noises like the old PSU so far!
