While trying to restart my computer, the computer shut itself off and kept restarting and getting stuck on the windows logo. Sometimes under the windows logo it said ''automatic repair''. After restarting the power supply I now get past the loading windows screen but get stuck on a black screen with just my cursor.

Also, the computer makes 2 very strange beeplike sounds on startup (though very different from the normal startup beep).

I checked the bios and noticed one of my harddrives didn't show up in the boot menu, but the harddrive that didn't show up isn't my bootdrive, so I don't know if this could be the cause.

Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Solution
the HDD that is not showing up in the bios may be dead, when windows is trying to boot up and gets past the logo screen it may be sitting there trying to figure out what the dead drive is. try unplugging it and see if windows boots up.

Absolutely agree with faalin. Other ideas:
1. Your BIOS might be trying to tell you sthg- the beeps - depends when those occur. You should be able to research that.
2. Win 8 has a nasty habit when encountering sthg it doesn't like of doing a couple of restarts (including automatic repair) and stopping or crashing (in my case switching off.. maybe a thermal cutout)- the last screen being black.

When I was installing Win 8 I laboriously discovered this was related to a particular program I'd installed- relatively innocuous. But in your case, this sounds more hardware related.
3. Try checking your 2nd drive externally connected to a PC if you can.

Ok an update, I managed to repair windows 8 and boot my computer properly though the D drive (the malfunctioning harddrive) still doesn't work and it seems all the programs installed on the D drive have been removed in the repair proces. I also disconnected the HDD and the beeps are now gone so it does seem to be that the HDD is broken.

Does anyone know if there is anything I can do to recover the data from the broken drive? Or would it be less effort to just reinstall the programs on the D drive? (mostly just steamgames, itunes etc.) since I already have a spare HDD.
