External Audio Buzzing Noise

Yesterday, I started getting a wierd light buzzing "vibrating" noise coming through my headphones. I have an external sound card, which should NOT be the issue. The headset is plugged directly into it.

When I open volume mixer and disable system sounds, it goes completely dead silent, as it should.

Anyone know what could be causing this? This is like water drop torture for me. It's not bad, but it's slowly building aggravation.

For reference, even though the hardware is likely innocent, I have an Asus Xonar DX sound card, and a Razer Taimat 7.1 headset. I'm running Windows 8.1 with the latest updates.

Three notable events occurred at roughly the same time that this happened:

A: I installed Oblivion and had to use some heavy compatibility settings.

B: I began remote controlling my PC from my work PC using Teamviewer.

C: I installed Shark 007 Codec pack (x64 advanced).

Keep in mind though, the first two shouldn't be causing any issues as far as I know, and I uninstalled the Shark 007 Codec pack just to see if it was the cause. No change.

Unfortunately, that's relating to the microphone primarily. The issue here is the output. I later discovered the solution, and then went back and figured out the problem again based on my previous activities.

As it turns out, it was a very peculiar audio glitch involving Oblivion. Oblivion crashed upon exit, causing the buzzing. The peculiar thing, is that the buzzing continued, even after a full restart and disabling the PSU temporarily to drain all power.

The trick to the solution was in the headset's controller. I had to press the 7.1 surround sound button in order to disable the 7.1. After this, the buzzing stopped. I simply re-enabled it, and all was well again.

I tested it a few times to verify that was the correct cause/solution.

Best answer to anyone who can explain why this happened, and how that solution fixed it. I imagine this could be a pretty annoying problem if this could happen with a different type of headset, so it would be beneficial to fully understand it.
