Hi everybody,

I have just put together a custom machine. It was my first time installing a water cooler and hope I put it together right. I followed the instructions to the T but noticed a guy from a Youtube video doing things a little different. I THINK this should be cooling way lower with this cooler. I don't even have it overclocked but I wanted to get opinions. When I installed this cooler I have placed the radiator on the outermost part of the case and the fan blowing out. The guy on the youtube video had the air coming into the case for some reason.

Tonight I was going to take the cooler off and also look at the thermal paste. I could have messed that up which may be a reason it's running high. I just put a drop on the center of the processor then screwed it down in an X hoping it would even out. It was the first time I've done it like that so I'm not sure. In the past I just took a credit card and lightly pasted it over. But I'd like to get some advice on what I should do apart from trying to redo the paste. Thank in advance.

Mmm, i've got a stock intel fan on an i3 4130 and it's idles at 33-35C.

But that's greatly affected by the fact I have my room at about 75-78 degrees Fahrenheit.

My CM Seidon 120M (with a push pull config) ona 4670k idles at 29-30 though.

@Joez, to do a true ideal test, go to Start > Run > Type msconfig > press enter and choose a diagnostic startup, then once the system is up turn on you temp monitoring software and see what it does. do a regular restart and your computer will be back to normal.

There could be some background programs making your processor do some work you don't know about. Or...

You could try to redo the past, might be it. How is your case set up and how is the cooler radiator set up,fans ect. pic would help. You may not have optimal airflow. What is your idle temp, what is your rig? Are you overclocked 24/7?

Ok, so I just re-did the paste. This time I took an old credit card and lightly pasted the whole processor. I got everything back together. I'm looking at my CPU usage right now and it is at 33 C under about 10% load. Now when I used HeavyLoad to bring it to 100% it spikes the CPU temp all the way to 70+ C right away. It almost hit 80 C and climbing. I only briefly did this. Right now I only have the front intake fan the case came with and the fan the cooler came with on the back. Any suggestions of what I can do? Here's a pic of my setup. I have not overclocked anything and these temps seem extremely high compared to what was said above...

Are you running at stock speeds? Because if you are, then those temps are really high with that cooler. I get 32C idle and 63C under 100% load with my i5 4460 under the stock cooler. You should try re-applying the thermal paste again but this time just put a very little drop (size of a pea or rice grain) and immediately put the cooler on it. Don't try to spread it out, the pressure of the cooler will do that for you. And if that doesn't work, then you either got a faulty chip or cooler.

Yes, these are stock speeds. The temps seem to idle cooler but spike higher under 100% load. It's weird..I might retry and it still doesn't work I guess I'll put the stock heatsink on and see what the temps are.. This is a bummer. I've never used a water cooler before. Is there a way I can check it to make sure it is working correctly? How cool are the tubes supposed to be? Also, how cool should the heatsink be that's attached to the processor? Nothing seems "really" cool to the touch.

I personally don't own a liquid cooler so I'm not sure about how hot the tubes are supposed to be but one thing I know is that the stock cooler comes pre applied with thermal paste so you don't need to worry about it.

Here's an update. I re-did the paste one more time and I think it's working! Idle CPU temps are 28 C - 30 C and when I spike the CPU to 100% it maxed so far at 62 C. What are everybody's thoughts on that? I hope these temps are ok. I do not have this overclocked at all. These are stock speeds.

There could be some background programs making your processor do some work you don't know about. Or your room is hot since it's summer. I think you may not have applied the thermal paste right. The way that's generally recommend is to put a SMALL pea sized drop (not the size of an actual pea if you know that size) in the center of the cpu and then let the weight of the heatsink being attached spread it out.

Paste is easy, and really will only account for ~5 *C difference if you apply it differently. More probably if you do it improperly. However you could always go the AIO water cooling option if you please.

Think i commented on a wrong thread... Disregard my previous post.

In this case though, I can also confirm that with a 4690k and an enermax AIO cooler I have gotten idle temps of around 30*. Full load temps w/ an oc of 4.6 @ 1.275 v never goes over 70* with prime 95. looks like it is normal for this chip and your setup.
