Hello,

Not sure if this is the appropriate location, if not, I apologize in advance. Im turning to the community to look for some help.

Recently, I turned on my laptop this morning and upon logging into my profile, I noticed my background was gone, and pretty much all of my icons/notepad files/photos on my desktop were gone. When I click the leftover ones like skype for example, it tells me its trying to install, which is weird, as its been installed for quite some time.

I tried a system restore to last week, figuring that might work, because the computer was working fine last night before bed. It didnt work unfortunately, so I poked around some more.

When I actually punch in my C:\Users\Username\Desktop it shows everything that SHOULD be on my desktop, and I can access the items I have tried to click on through that.

Anyone got any ideas on what this could be? I havent downloaded anything recently, so Im not sure it could be a virus, unless its been laying dormant for a few weeks and just now popped up. Also, my C drive is pretty full, only about 6-7 Gigs left of space, so Im not sure if that has anything to do with it.

Any help would be appreciated, Id really hate to have to transfer everything to an external and reformat this thing.

Honestly this sound more like a virus. A pretty serious one. But there is a small chance its a failing hard drive, but it would be more obvious if it were.

Step 1, download the ultimate bootcd and burn it, reboot and scan ur hard drive for errors.

http://www.ultimatebootcd.com/

Step 2, if no errors, go back to windows and back up all of your data that you can access to an external hard drive or flash drive.
Remember, browser favorites, picture folders, my documents, and if you have a lot of random, useful programs like me, you can take screenshots of your program files directory to remember what to install after you re-install windows. Then, re-install from fresh format.

Step 3, make sure you download an antivirus before you...

Step 3, make sure you download an antivirus before you plug in your hard drive and disable autoplay.

To disable AutoPlay, please follow the directions below:
Open My Computer.
Right-click on the drive letter of the external hard drive and select Properties.
Click on the "AutoPlay" tab and select Take No Action for every type of content (in the drop-down box it will list each type of content).
Click on Apply and then click on OK.

After installed antivirus, plug in drive and do a full scan on the drive to insure no re-infection.

if drive has error, follow the backup instruction and get a new drive.
