Current Build

i7 4790k (Currently Clocked to 4.6ghz)
Asus Z97-Pro
16gb G.Skill Tridents (currently clocked to 2400mhz)
EVGA 780 TI dual Classified (currently clocked to 1346mhz)
EVGA G2 850 Gold
Corsair Hydro 110
WD 1tb Black (ya ya i know get an SSD)

Well during gaming, here is a list of games tested.

Total war Rome II
PayDay 2
Planetside 2

I am only seeing a max of 10% usage in the cpu on any given core.... now i am not complaining i mean this thing is eating games alive.

Now normally with features like turbo/speed step things like that you will see a scale down in CPU except when using programs that are demanding then it (in my case) will jump to 4.6ghz. But even in games it will scale down with no lag or dip in FPS as if it is just sitting there waiting for something to do(now mind you not getting any skipping lags or low frames) Just seems like it should be using way more processing power. any ideas or thoughts on this?

Again there is nothing to fix here as everything is working better than expected (after flashing the bios that is a different story) but is this cpu just straight overkill?

Temps under Prime95 stress and aid 53c (less in gaming) GPU in bencmark/stress test 79c

I wouldnt say overkill, I use mine to play games whilst also running a VM or two :p It just opens you up to running multiple things at once on your machine instead of closing out of everything to play a hardware intensive game.

It was just a bit shocking to me, on Rome II for example during the RTS battles (which btw if you have not seen them they are intense)

my i5 3570k (at 4.5ghz) would ramp up to 70% usage + up and down. i was running a EVGA 670 FTW card.

You might as well save some wear and tear and power usage and put all your clocks to standard. Note all the overclocks ready to put them back on when your system is starting get stressed.

Why stress it and have degrade quicker when there is no need?

When you only keep a CPU for 3-4 years at a time (Or in this case, gap between Haswell and Broadwell), running them at full speed doesn't mean a whole lot for longevity. If you wanted it to last just get a Xeon and leave everything at stock.
