Clicking on microphone in Sounds causes crash

This is a problem I've never encountered before, whenever I go on Sound > Recording devices and select my microphone it gives me an error "Windows shell Common DII stopped working". Merely left clicking on the mic causes this crash and everything else in Sound seems to respond okay.

My mic isn't working either.

Alright so I performed a clean install of windows just before and I am no longer receiving the crash. The mic is still not responsive even though it is showing as plugged in. This is really annoying can anyone provide some insight? I'm using the V-moda boompro.

Edit: crash has returned, I have absolutely no clue why.
