What will happen if I install Sapphire R9 270x Toxic to PCIe x4 slot instead of PCIe x16 slot?

entirely depends if its pci-e 1.0, 2.0 or 3.0. If its in a 3.0, then it should still run fine, 2.0 might cause a slightly slower speed, 1.0 x4 will bottleneck it and reduce performance quite a bit.

2.0 and 3.0 are the same. There has been no real world or noticeable difference. As long as it is 2.0 the you are fine.

However, you must install GPU in x16. Installing in x4 will hurt performance.

They are noticeably different if you are using x4, which is what he was asking...

And what about PCIe 2.0 x16, instead of PCIe 3.0 x16?
Thanks!

What? That makes no sense.
Pci-e 3.0 x4 is effectively pci-e 2.0 x8 which wont hurt performance for a card like this.
Pci-e 2.0 x4 how ever will hinder performance.

So 2.0 performs the same as 3.0. Assuming they are x16.

PCIe x16 Slots, Generation:
A) 1, Running at x4 (PCIE4)

B) 1, Running at x16 (PCIE16)

This is the spec of my mobo(gigabyte ga-b75m-d3h rev1.1)

What if I install it in A intead of B? There are some space constraints in the cabinet...

This is really confusing me.

If you install in slot A, you will get 1/4 the bandwidth between the motherboard and graphics card. With a Gen 1 PCIe slot, you are going to want as many lanes as possible.

Both slots are gen2.
You will want to install the graphics card in the top slot, the one just below to the cpu, that's the x16 slot.
The slot on the bottom of the board is the x4 slot, you want to avoid using this slot for a graphics card.
