Hi

This is my first build and I'm hoping for some advice if possible.
I can't choose whether to get the A10-7800 (45 - 65 w) versus the A10-7850k (95w)

I'm not a gamer so I figure that I don't need a graphics card nor the o/c ability and I don't do video editing. So I'm thinking that either of these APUs would be suitable.

The kind of things I will use are: basic to intermediate complexity photo editing, two monitors, running a vm OS, LAN file sharing, all the usual like email, web, exel, playing videos and music etc. Multiple partitions with various OS.

My question is whether I would save much in the way of power and fan requirements or fan noise by going with the 7800?

If yes, is it possible to just acheive the same result in the 7850k by changing the settings somewhere?

Yes I've read the review specs on power consumption but I haven't read anything on cooling requirements so I'm just looking for some guidance as I've never had to calculate these things before.

And the A10-7800 is still not available in Australia.

Thank you for any help you can offer.

A10-7800 is factory underclock version of A10-7850..
both of cpu is the same chip..

the differences is, a10 7800 is locked multiplier, and a10 7850 have unlocked multiplier..

So, 7850 is better, you can change it to 7800 class by underclock your cpu and undervolt it to 7800 level, and voila, same wattage consumption..
but if you want higher power processing, just overclock it as high as possible..

Quaddro - thankyou very much for that information. I guess that has me sorted. Thanks again!

You can overclock the reference clock to overclock the A10-7800. Then you can adjust all the other settings such as ram divider etc.....

With that being said I would still get the A10-7850K and undervolt and underclock it the lower TDP is important to you. And it is more straightforward to overclock an unlocked cpu.

Thanks for the confirmation - I'll go that way

It depends on whether you are planning to overclock or not. And also whether power draw is important to you.

7850k = Easy overclock. Same out of the box specs. 95w tdp

7800 = Old style overclocking only. Same specs. 65w/45w tdp. (you can pick which power draw you want. Comes stock as 65w, can be set to 45w, with lower clock speed).

So, if I was planning on overclocking, I would go for the 7850k. If I cared more about power usage, and didn't plan on overclocking, I would head for the 7800.
