So... how is this even possible?

Hello people,
So, today, I decided to try to overclock my i5 4460 to see if I could get another 100 MHz out of it. I tried it for fun and I thought it wasn't going to work with a locked CPU on a locked budget board (B85). It did. That's what I'm confused about. I went into the BIOS and I was able to change the multiplier. When I clicked on CPU information, it told me that the CPU was unlocked. Don't believe me?

(please note that this picture was taken before overclocking the CPU, hence the 3.2 GHz clock)

How is this possible? I checked the Windows Computer Properties, CPU-Z and HWinfo and they all show the speed at 3.3 GHz I'm on a locked board with a locked CPU. I am using the stock cooler. Would I fry my CPU with that overclock? I tried gaming with a basic CryEngine 3 demo and the CPU generally stayed at 3.2 GHz instead of 3.3. Is this normal? Also, I changed the multiplier and something called "ring speed" or something alike. Whatever that is, it was also running at 3.2 GHz before OCing. Is it dangerous to change that? Thanks in advance.

EDIT: Now I checked HWinfo again and its showing the turbo clock at 3.3 GHz (supposed to be 3.4). Did I change my turbo clock? I'm pretty sure I changed the FSB multiplier from 32 to 33, not 34 to 33.

the easiest way to check...
download any benchmark program..cinebench, aida or something else..
and compare your result between standard clock and overclock condition..for example 3.2 and 3.5 (while overclock)

if you get much better points in your overclock condition, well, you should buy a lot lotto then..:D

Ok, well, I tried going over 3.3 GHz and it didn't let me reach anything above 3.4 GHz.

Anyway, here's the Cinebench results, which I found really odd:

Stock speed (3.2 GHz): 478

OC (3.3 GHz) 472.

I don't know why the OC one is lower than stock. The temps, usage and voltages were completely fine during rendering. Also, even on the OC setup, it didn't get to 3.3, just kept at 3.2 GHz for some odd reason.

Updating the BIOS sounds intriguing but I'm really paranoid about the process so yeah. Also, 3.2 GHz is doing just fine for me in the games I'm playing.

Thanks for the help anyway though.

If there is a bug in the bios you should really update it. Its foolproof in modern boards.

Now, I'm sorry if I'm going to sound like someone who thinks he knows it all, but I doubt there is a bug with my BIOS. Even if there is, it hasn't caused me any issues. 200 MHz isn't that much of a performance boost either.

It isn't a bug per se. The bios you are using may not have the proper cpu microcode. That you wouldn't know unless you went to the manufacturers web site and checked out the boards cpu compatibility list.
