I am trying to make a $500 gaming pc. so far the pieces i have chosen are as listed:

purchased

sapphire hd 7950 that i got on sale for $146.00, a corsair cx 500w psu that again i got on sale for $47.

not purchased

fx 8320 (~$154), G.SKILL Ripjaws 4gb ram (~$44), ASRock 970 Extreme3 (~$80), and DIYPC Gamemax08-G atx case (~$40).

Now for the real question, I want to know if there is a better motherboard for cheaper or at about the same price (~$80) and i also need to know if im going overboard getting the fx 8320, i dont play games like titan fall or crysis. i think the most demanding game i play is phantasy star online 2(although watch dogs looks really good) i also play emulated ps2 games. other than that i browse the internet and use the 3D animation program blender.

(TL;DR fx 8320 or 6350? dont play many demanding games (plays phantasy star online 2 and ps2 emulators) $500 budget there anything in my list i could get cheaper?)

Not a bad combination. There is one cheaper board, at least at the moment with rebates, then the 970 Extreme3 that I recommend, but that is a solid choice. If you are interested: http://pcpartpicker.com/part/asus-motherboard-m5a97ler20

FX8320 is about as good as it gets from AMD, base clock is fairly low, but that is easily changed. Many people run it at 4.5Ghz or more with the right CPU cooler.

Only 4GB of memory, fine for now, but you should buy ram in pairs 2x4GB kit would set you up for the life of the PC.

Does that motherboard have out of the box compatibility? the reason i chose the one i did is because it does. I'm just worried I'll buy a mobo and it not work until i update the BIOS and with no other processor on hand i would be screwed. oh and i can really only get 1 stick of ram at the moment due to the fact that i really only have about $560 for this build but im setting aside the $60 for shipping just in case.

The GTX 560 is indeed an elder GPU, but for your budget it's an astonishing card which supports DX11 and will support DX12 too. With all the cuts I've made, I've also selected an Intel i5-4440 processor which handles games like a champ. 8GB RAM is ideal for heavy gaming but again, due to the budget I've only managed to select 4GB; regardless an entire system which includes an i5 + GPU for $500 is no small feat IMO.

I'd purchase the above and you should be all set. Click the first link, "PCPartPicker part list" above to view the coupon codes.

All the best. :)

thanks but i did some research and your build seems to be on par with the one im currently planning on building (that and i have my heart set on an AMD build) but thanks anyway. i realize i also forgot to mention i already have a dvd drive and hard drive from a computer that broke a year ago that i never threw out.

The diffreence between an 8xxx and a 6xxx is the number of cores, a 6300 will perform just as well as an 8320 in most games, if your just gaming, a 6300 should be enough.

I also suggest a better case, a source 210 or a corsair 200r are quality cases for a great price.
