This has been happening ever since I returned my computer to factory settings. At random times, my Synaptics PS/2 touchpad gives me a message that it has stopped working. I am still able to scroll up and down a page via the scroll bars on the the side of pages, but I can no longer use the scroll function on the right side of the touchpad.

I'm not using an external mouse, only the touchpad. I have been looking for a solution to this for weeks and when I go to the mouse properties, it says my mouse is working fine.

Can anyone help, please?

Try installing the latest Synaptics touchpad driver from HP's website. For UK models it's here:
http://www8.hp.com/uk/en/support.html

For other countries click the link at bottom-left of page.
