I was wandering if the i7 950 or 960 was any good for gaming and editing and how good it is with power consumption and any heat problems thank you

Solution
They're not the best considering today's standards and improvements in architectures and efficiency but yes, they should be good for gaming and editing.
Don't know about the heat issues though.

Why aren't you getting the latest Haswell CPUs? The cheapest Haswell i5 should outperform the i7 960 by a large margin.

Solution
If you have a i7-950/960 then it is still useable.
But, I would not buy one today when there are better chips available that take less heat and power.

The i7-950 has a passmark rating of 5645 and is a 130w rated cpu.
By comparison, the i5- 4430 quad has a passmark rating of 6319 and is a 84w cpu.

I still use a Core i5-750 (slower, but from the same generation as the 950 and 960), and still have no trouble keeping 50-60 FPS in basically every game. As for heat, the i7-950 and -960 have approximately the same TDP as an AMD FX-8350. It'll be hotter than a new Haswell chip, but it should be no problem to keep cool with a reasonable cooler and airflow.
