Can I crossfire an R9 280 (no X) with a HD 7970?

I already have a R9 280 and want to crossfire it at some point. Will I be able to crossfire with an HD 7970 and if not can I crossfire with a 280X?

(Sorry if it's a noob question) help would be appreciated.

No you can't crossfire a 280 and 7970 at the same time. However you can crossfire either the 7970 with another 7970 or a 280 with another 280.

I don't know. The R9-280 uses the Tahiti GPU and the HD 7970 uses the Tahiti XT. Not sure if that qualifies as the same GPU or not.
The HD 7950 and HD 7970 were crossfire compatible.
