My laptop has 1 HDMI port and 1 VGA port. Is there a way to extend the desktop to these two ports?

Do you mean you want two monitors is what you're saying? If so just connect (prferably) the HDMI cable to your external monitor, and in Windows hit Windows-Key-P to access monitor settings, and configure your two screens.
