I suggest the r9 290 because it most likely is cheaper than the gtx 780. It'll perform at the same level as the gtx 780 as well. If you're worrying about heat issues or anything, get a card with a nice aftermarket cooler, like the tri-x, windforce, or something.
woops I was looking at the 780 ti instead of the 780. The 780 and r9 290 are about the same. I personally like nvidia and the 780 6gb version is a nice option too. It comes down to can you justify the extra $ for a 780. Sorry man im rlly tired and have been looking at numbers and writing all day. eyes are tired. missed the ti.
The review you linked contradicts everything you said. At lower resolutions, they trade. The 780 winning in some games, the r9 290 winning in others. As the resolution is turned up, they still trade and go fairly even with each other. I'm not sure what you're looking at.
