Building tips:
-the motherboard is a lot stronger than you'd think! but that doesn't mean go banging it around
-putting in the RAM takes quite a bit of force until you hear the "click" then you are done
-the CPU must be powered by the 4-pin or 8-pin connector on the motherboard, usually off to the side
-when pulling down the CPU lever (on Intel) there is a lot of resistance and you feel it will snap, but it won't
-make sure before building stuff on the motherboard, to place the motherboard in the case and plan where is will go. Then, install your standoffs, on which the motherboard will rest. Standoffs are usually included with the case, as well as other screws.
-work in a non-static environment like on a wooden table. Touch the case every so often to discharge static

Buying Tips:
-make sure to buy a hard drive that fits your bay (I made the mistake of buying a 5.5" hard drive, but it still works in my 3.5" bay
-make sure your motherboard CPU socket matches that of the one you buy
-ask on Tomshardware what power supply wattage you need
-buy DDR3 RAM, which all modern motherboards support

Software
-remember to install your drivers. Drivers are software that enables your operating system to either work with or fully utilize it's hardware.
-if on Windows, install a form of virus protection
