Hi all,

Hope someone have the knowledge to help me out :)

Need to install a firewire Card for streaming video editing from a DV camera since no firewire is onboard.

I have a Asus X79 deluxe board: http://www.asus.com/Motherboards/X79DELUXE/
I have a GPU Geforce GTX 780 Strix : Http://www.asus.com/Graphics_Cards/STRIXGTX780OC6GD5/
I have a Asus soundcard: http://www.asus.com/Sound_Cards/Xonar_D2X/

So the problem is my GPU is covering for the first PCIEX1(pciexpress) slot
And in the other PCIEX1 slot i have the soundcard so that means i only have the 3 PCIEX16 slot available for expansions.
A few Things im thinking about:

Can i buy a PCI firewire Card that can fit with my motherboard since the mobo is new i have doubts about these long PCI slots will Work with an older PCI firewire Card.
I know i could not take my old creative audigy pci sound Card and put in my new machine since the pci slot in the old vs the new has changed.

Any suggestions to what firewire PCI type/Card that will Work on this new motherboards PCI slots if any?

If not then does anyone know if i can get an adapter for PCIEX16 to PCIEX1 so i can buy a firewire express expansion Card and pop that in there?

If that is not possible any other suggestions would be great? :)

Regards
Ken

PCI and PCIE use completely different signaling and the slots are mechanically different too so no, you cannot put a PCI cards in a PCIE slot directly. There probably are PCI-to-PCIE bridge adapter cards out there though... or maybe FireWire to USB2/3 adapters.

Thanks Guys for answering ;)

So Casey what you are saying is example http://www.sunix.com.tw/product/fwb3414g.html

1.can that fit/work into 1 of my long pci slots even do the "leg" of that Card is so much smaller than the pci slot?
2.Will the card still Work at full speed too?

3.Could i even now take the xonar soundcard sitting in the Express slot and move to a pci slot and it will Work?

4. Maybe stupid question but why do they make these small pci Express slots on my motherboard if pci Express Cards will Work just fine in the bigger pci slots on my motherboard?

thanks Again!

PCI Express relies on "lanes" to transfer information. That's what the "x1" and "x16" mean when discussing PCI Express. The length of the card edge depends on how much information needs to be transferred, and corresponds to the number of lanes that are used. All PCI Express cards share the same pinout that PCI Express x1 cards use. The extended length on some cards is just for the extra lanes the cards uses.

Your motherboard does not have any Conventional PCI slots, just PCI Express slots. Conventional PCI slots are taller and keyed differently from PCI Express slots.
