I'm looking to get into editing videos with After Effects and Premier pro. Im also looking to stream games on twitch using Open Broadcast Software in order to both stream and record. I'm also using 2 screens with my current setup, mainly for simplicity and when I play games its always just on the 1 screen.

When I either start to record or start to stream I notice a dip in my performance and I know its not the software I'm using because I've tried other ways to stream and record and I get the same effect.

My specs, from DxDiag are:

So my question is, out of all my specs what is the best thing to upgrade, if anything at all. I can only afford 1 upgrade right now so I need to know what my specs are lacking in for recording and streaming.

Side note: The games that i'm both streaming and recording at the moment is League of Legends and Warframe.

More about : upgrade order stream record games effectively

I would upgrade your GPU.

Actually you NEED to upgrade your RAM. See that "paging file"? That means your RAM is all filled up so your computer is depositing some temporary data into the hard drive, this causes a major slowdown. You should upgrade to 16GB or 12GB of RAM. Paging is never good to use.

Well RAM is pretty cheap, so should I upgrade both my RAM and GPU?

I updated my answer to explain why. You need more RAM for sure. If you want to spend the money, get a GTX 760.

Those parts aren't bad. I guess i'd get a better cpu, like a i7 3770k and if you have the money a cooler so you can overclock.

@reuklm14: he is paging temporary data, he needs more RAM. It shows it in the image he posted.

8gb should be fine for what he's doing, and I would guess that the bottleneck is more on his CPU than anything else.

Off the top of my head I believe OBS is most strongly bound to CPU performance - It's trying to transcode video on the fly which is an extremely demanding task.

So CPU is what I need to make my system run smoother when recording or streaming, and an increase in RAM to stop paging?

Yes that sounds right. A 3rd gen i7 will do.

Oh and - GPU isn't a part of where the slow down is coming from. Even if OBS could use GPU power for transcoding, they wouldn't use it because of how much it would effect performance. The loss of FPS is coming directly from the extra load on his CPU, and upgrading that would definitely be the best use of his money. More RAM can help, certainly, but it's not the primary cause here.

The i7 3770k is good and you wont have to upgrade your gpu because the i5 3330 is lga1155 and the 3770k is lga1155.

So, upgrading my RAM to 12gb, then a 3rd gen i7 and lastly if I can afford it make rum 16gb?

I think 12gb should be good.

Currently according to his paging file, once he upgrades the RAM that will be about 10GB used while recording.

Well, thanks a tonne for the quick and easy to understand replys with what I need to do. Going to upgrade my RAM to 12gb and find an i7 core as well.

The paging file stat means functionally nothing in this context. To know for sure you need to see a graph of paging usage through out the record process. It's RADICALLY more complex than just saying 'Using VRAM = Needs MORE RAM!'

RAM and VRAM use is a complex multifaceted process that is governed by the application usage at any given point. You make use of VRAM for many reasons, even when you have the physical memory to accommodate it. I can see from my perfmon that my VRAM is currently in use even though my RAM is less than half used while using no demanding applications, just Chrome and VLC. But... How can this be! Because it's much more complicated than you seem to think it is.

If nothing else, RAM utilization is totally dynamic. Even if his problem is memory related, which I don't believe it is, he could almost certainly free up a significant amount of RAM just by closing active programs while he streams.

For one - I record and stream with 4gb of ram with no problems. I know plenty of people who do it with 8gb. Having more RAM won't allow for the transcoding of video to happen faster, it will just give him more of a buffer before it becomes a problem.

RAM is part of the equation but it's nowhere near as significant a part of the equation as processor power because more than anything this is a processor intensive process. Especially when you consider that RAM is seldom a factor in game performance at all, and there's no reason to suspect that having more RAM would solve his problem anyway.
