Planning to buy a new GPU however stuck between 2. How much more of a performance difference is there between these 2 GPU's? From research it seems that r9 270X will be able to run games at high settings at high resolution and for few years. Or should I wait for new GPU R9 285 which I heard is going to be released soon however don't have any clue on the price or performance.

Solution
Definitely go with the Gigabyte R9 280 WF http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00J41A5GK. It offers the best price to performance ratio and the R9 280 is an all around better card than the R9 270X.

The 270X doesn't have much more OC'ing headroom while the 280 has a lot. Not to mention the 280 has a larger memory bus, more shaders, and pretty much better everything.

What? The 270x struggles with new games on medium settings? How does the 270x perform in BF4? Runs nearly on Ultra. If you mean Watch Dogs, then all GPUs struggle and so do the people trying to play it due to all the issues. The 280 is an excellent GPU. It all comes down to price. If you can get the 280 for a good price cuz of a sale then do it. Also, you might be able to find a 280x selling discounted. It's price has dropped making it one of the best buys out there.

Alex is talking about Framerates , everybody has this magical threshold that he likes maybe he sets his bar a little bit high like 60 FPS on high settings which won't be achieved easily in every game however the new consoles run most games on native 792p and 900p with less than 60 FPs in some games so the 270X should definitely beat a console quite easily .

The 270X is a quite capable card of achieving medium-High settings 1080p without breaking a sweat on most games however to answer your question the 280 is a much better card , the 285 will be closer to the 280 rather than the 280X which shouldn't be worth the wait in my opinion ( In Between the 280 and 280X )

Benchmarks ( Your choice should be based on these benchmarks ) :

These are benchmarks for the MSI but most cards will function identically , where as the 270X benchmarks are here

If we take Bioshock infinite as a common ground and compare

So see the average difference in FPS in most games and make your choice , I think the 280 is a clear winner especially that you can get the 280 for $199 ( Gigabyte Version ) which is 10 more bucks than the 270X moreover the 280 is almost 10-15% faster in all games
