I am using MSI GS60. 128G SSD*2(RAID0)+1TB HDD.

I have configured power setting and set "Turn off hard disk after" to never. But my HDD still spin down after 10~20 seconds, a very short period of time. This caused some program to freeze very frequently, if they were installed on HDD.

It seems that the power setting in OS only apply to the system drive(SSD), I have tried searching in BIOS for related option but with no luck.

what else can I do?

It appears that the drive's own APM may be spinning it down after a preset idle timeout.

Try quietHDD:

What is the model of your drive?

Hi! My GS60 has the same annoying feature. I use CrystalDiskInfo to disable HDD APM. You have to download Standard Edition, then go to Function -> Advanced Feature -> AAM/APM Control. Select HDD and change settings for APM under APM section between Min Power and Performance. Or you can disable APM feature completely.

It works for me. Hope it will help.

Update:
Changes made to APM scheme will be active only for the period of current Windows session. If computer is put on sleep or hibernation APM value will be reverted back to drive's factory default settings.

Looking for another solution. QuietHDD seems to be the best one.
