Desktop Died, not sure why

So I came home the other day and turned on my desktop (my first one I put together instead of buying, been working nicely for 6-7 months). I boot it up, and am greeted with a screen stating that "Windows failed to start. A recent hardware or software change might be the cause. If Windows files have been damaged or configured incorrectly, Startup Repair can help diagnose and fix the problem. If power was interrupted during startup, choose Start Windows Normally." and I am given the option to "Launch Startup Repair(recommended)" or "Start Windows Normally"

I didn't think much of it, maybe something glitched, tried to start windows normally. The windows animated logo showed up, and it looked like it was doing some stuff. Suddenly the screen went black(there has been a glimpse of a BSOD on occasion when I've tried this option troubleshooting), and returned to the screen in the paragraph above. A bit miffed, I tried Startup Repair, which says its loading the files before the screen goes black, and nothing happens, even after sitting for a minute or two.

After toggling between the two "just in case", put in the Windows DVD to attempt to repair or reinstall. Both of these options cause the computer to seemingly freeze, though the waiting animation still plays on the mouse cursor. Clicking Repair does nothing after this, but attempting to reinstall shows "Setting Up" or somesuch before freezing and not doing anything.

Later that night, coming home from going out, I decided to have another look at it, and powered the computer on, the fans started spinning and it instantly died. Toggling the power after this did nothing. Per a friends suggestion, I spray dusted and unplugged/replugged a bunch of the cords. Putting it all back together, the computer powers up again, but I am still left with the problem I've mentioned.

What is the problem and how can I fix it? One friend thinks the PSU is to blame, I'm not sure what to think but the fact it powers on leaves doubt in my mind. I'm hoping to get this fixed without shelling out a lot and/or building another one from scratch since it cost me a pretty penny.

Thanks in advance for any help.

When you blew out your PC and plugged anything back together, you have damaged something. Did you do anything to your hard drive? I think your problem is there.
