Powerline networking problems

i just bought one of these : http://
and it was getting 7 mb down and 10 mb up while my brothers mb air with a thunderbolt to ethernet adapter straight into the router got 50 mb and 10 down. whats wrong.

Direct plug in to the router is always better. Power line speeds degrade based distance and the quality of power lines. I have 100mb net speed into a gigabytes router yet my power line connection in my living room only gets about 15mb. Limits of power line technology

sadly i can not do a direct plug because people would trip on it and im on the other side of the house

You need to be sure that on both ends you directly plug the powerline units into the wall. No power strip or extension cords etc. You might try different outlets in the 2 rooms and see if it makes any difference. Powerline is actually a radio signal just sent over wires so it can get interference just like WiFi.
